Raven and Keylam drove to Bleckede in Lower Saxony on September 9 to hear what the party had to say, to see the programme it stands for, and to talk with the people there. The video has four parts: an introduction, the recording from the site, the conversation the next day, and a closing word.
What there was to hear was nothing. The hall held about 150 people and was closed an hour before the announced start; there were no speakers outside, two lines of security and police across the way, and whoever arrived at the hour the event was supposed to begin got no further. Beside it lay an empty car park with room for thousands, holding some police vehicles and water cannon. People who had come to listen were sent over to the counter-demonstration, and the whole crowd was then counted as one and called a safety risk. We asked for a way around to film the other side as well, so the day would be shown from both ends; every route led back to the same side. At the counter-demonstration there were chants and music, and the question of what was actually happening a hundred metres away did not come up.
The next day Raven puts it together: a campaign is meant to deliver a programme that citizens can examine before they vote, and that is the one thing that did not happen. What gets agreed behind closed doors cannot be checked by the people who pay for it. From there to what a republic is — equal standing for every single one, and the duty of a citizen to look at what is going on rather than hand it to somebody else. And to the part we leave undone: writing off the other side as the enemy. A country is built by people cooperating, not by separating. You go into the debate, you ask what a person actually stands for, and you keep that going with everybody.
In the closing word Keylam looks back on that day three weeks later: how little he had cared before to see what was going on, how hard it is to be honest with yourself about it, and how fear makes you blind and pulls the horizon in. Problems do not leave on their own, not in a life and not in a country. They get looked at, talked through, and fixed.
