Too often we cut people out, even though the community is the whole population of a country already working together every day. Everyone makes, offers, repairs, or serves something, and it all lands on the market for everyone else. There is no real “outside” — we already supply one another. The trouble is hate and standing opinions get in the way. Respect is the basic thing we need: I live from the labor of others — the farmer, the handcrafter, the serviceman — and they from mine. A country is like a crew on a ship: if not everybody keeps his post, it doesn’t survive a storm. From the smallest man to the president, everybody is needed. Our neighbor is not our enemy, and there ain’t any strangers, only friends you don’t know. It reaches the whole world: they are all people like you and me. Respect for everybody is the minimum for a world that works — based not on profit but on social competence. What we want is simple and natural: to build a family, a well-being, and a future for our kids — the same thing every living creature, every bird and every animal, reaches for. From there we look at what it really takes to live well together: a place to live, cooperation, and a community where each person’s skills and work support everyone else. Nobody has to classify themselves as one side or the other, because basically we are human beings aiming for the same natural things.
